Top Ten Toddler Tales

My little boy is about to turn two and like many toddlers, he LOVES books. Although his favourites tend change every few weeks (fortunately as it can get wearing singing Puff the Magic Dragon or doing the voice of the troll for the hundredth time that week!), there are definitely some that he comes back to time and time again.

The (virtual) shelves are crammed with brilliant and beautiful books for toddlers and it can be a bit overwhelming, so I decided to compile a list of the top 10 based on recommendations from my friends.

(The list was created based on the most popular answers that I received. No surprise that Julia Donaldson features heavily!)

1) Dear Zoo - Rod Campbell

2) The Gruffalo - Julia Donaldson

3) Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy - Lynley Dodd

4) We’re going on a Bear Hunt - Michael Rose

5) The Very Hungry Caterpillar - Eric Carle

6) Guess How Much I Love You - Sam McBratney

7) Each Peach Pear Plum - Janet and Allan Ahlberg

8) The Koala Who Could - Rachel Bright

9) Room on the Broom - Julia Donaldson (and many more got a mention)

10) The Tale of Peter Rabbit - Beatrix Potter

However, being a first-time author of a children’s book myself, I am very aware how difficult it is to compete with classic books that have been passed down through generations and are on the shelves of every book shop in the country. With that in mind, I have created a second list of stories that aren’t as well-known, which my friends have discovered and their little ones love as much as the classics:

1) Jumblebum - Chae Strathie

2) The Cave – Rob Hodgson

3) Puffin Peter - Petr Horacek

4) Be Brave Little Penguin - Giles Andreae

5) Wow said the Owl - Tim Hopgood

6) Beautiful Bananas - Elizabeth Laird

7) My Best Pet - Louise Tate

8) Fidgety Fish - Ruth Galloway

9) I Spy Something Wonderful - David Conway

10) The Very Greedy Bee – Steve Smallman

I’d love to know your toddler’s favourites! Have we missed one that we need to know about? Please share your recommendations in the comments.

Thanks to everyone who sent me their list of favourites! :)
